Updated: Jul 9

Cultural Conversations were proud to be part of Nelson Jewellery Week. We hosted a Garland workshop from Kaetaeta Wilson from Kiribati, the Jewel in the Brown, the Mahi ringa makers lounge, and Vikki Mason's brooch workshop.

A Magical Experience in Whakatū

Jude van der Merwe reviews the premier jewellery event in Aotearoa and finds works with deep historical resonance.

Kia ora – pinch me, I’m dreaming. These were among my first and recurring thoughts after arriving in Whakatū, Nelson. The place is an entire picture postcard. Unbelievably pretty views, gorgeous hills surrounding an ambitiously large curved bay, fabulous cafes, wine bars, restaurants, and utterly brilliant weather. Better still, it’s an entirely walkable city.

A Thriving Arts Community

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it did. Nelson Jewellery Week (NJW), developed and presented by Arts Council Nelson, collaborates with local jewellers, galleries, and the community. This event is a gem of the first order.

Throughout the week, we engaged with local artisans and learned about their craft. From the intricate designs of Kaetaeta Wilson to the skillful creations at the Mahi ringa makers lounge, every workshop revealed a story. Each piece shared not just beauty but also the culture and history of its maker.

Workshops that Inspire

The workshops during NJW were particularly inspiring. Vikki Mason's brooch workshop was a standout, where participants explored creativity and self-expression through jewellery. Each participant left with a unique piece that resonated with their personal journey.

The Jewel in the Brown offered a unique experience as well, merging art and storytelling. Attendees learned about the cultural significance of jewellery in various communities. It’s incredible how a simple piece can carry so much weight in terms of history and meaning.

The Importance of Community Connections

Events like NJW foster community connections. They create opportunities for collaboration among artists. When local jewellers come together, they share experiences and techniques that strengthen the craft as a whole. This sense of community was palpable throughout the week.

Moreover, the collaboration with Arts Council Nelson highlights the importance of supporting local talent. Njw is a testament to how local initiatives can thrive when given a platform. The vibrant atmosphere created by artists interacting with the public also added to the event's charm.

Looking Forward

In conclusion, Nelson Jewellery Week was not just an event – it was a celebration of culture, craft, and community. From the stunning workshops to the breathtaking location, every moment was special. If you missed this year's event, be sure to mark your calendars for next year.

Keep an eye on Garland Magazine. They offer insights into the stories behind what we make.

Through initiatives like NJW, we can support the continuing evolution of jewellery and ensure that these stories and traditions are passed down to future generations. Let's celebrate and honor the creativity that thrives in our communities!
